The Journey thus far...
Google has just decided that my account actually exists, so I'm back to blogging. I'm in New York currently, delaying leaving the apartment because my feet hurt so terribly from my shoes. I'm going to buy the cheapest pair I can today, then throw my old pair a little funeral in Central Park. My money is dwindling fast, I have less than $250 now, and twelve more days of travel left. What's killed my budget the most are the absurdly high ATM surcharges, and Tennessee's and New York's sales tax.
I am officially moving to Milwaukee as soon as I return, to a fabulous place on the East Side with some friends. I can't get over how low the rent is. Trust me, it's cheaper than yours. I'll have to find a new job, unfortunately. Maybe I'll end up with something decent this time, like at a bookstore.
Most helpful items I've brought with:
Cigarettes- I don't give money out to people, but I will give them a cigarette.
Baby wipes- Oh man, if I didn't have these, I'd be in a sorry state. Also useful when dried out as a reusable, yet disposable tissue.
Amtrak Rail pass- this has saved me hundreds of dollars.
Sarong- doubles as a scarf, blanket, towel, and a skirt.
Favorite cities so far: Memphis, Knoxville, Asheville, Charleston, and NYC.
Best way to travel: Megabus. Cheap, on time, and clean. Amtrak is never on time. NEVER.
Favorite Coffee shop: Java Cabana in Memphis, TN. It feels like you're hanging out in someone's kitchen, and everyone who walks in is your friend.
Best place for brekkers: Jack's Cafe in Charleston, SC. Good, tasty, and cheap. Incredibly friendly employees.
Prettiest: Savannah, GA. American Gothic at it's best.
Most likely to get hit by a car in: Savannah, GA. Cars fly by at 40 mph or faster down narrow streets.
Most likely to get hit by a bicycle in: NYC. They will NOT stop for you.
Best beer selection: Mellow Mushroom, which is found through out the south. 300+ varieties of beer.
Best vegan food: Rosetta's Kitchen in Asheville, NC.
Best Seafood: Charleston, SC.
Keep in mind, I still have two cities to go!
